Exceptional Student Education teacher, Travis, makes the world a brighter, safer place for students.
Children need role models. When faced with emotional and mental health issues, they need someone to believe in them and say, “I’m proud of you.” Humble, yet fearless leader Travis Foster is an inspiration to those in his self-contained classroom at Lakeside Jr. High School.
Whether they belong to a group home, have a severe disability or are victims of abuse, Travis’ mission is to make all students become productive and trusting members of society. Since earning his teaching degree in December, he has developed an effective and impactful program that reinforces positive behavior and social skills. His humor and personality inject into each lesson, creating a comfortable and energetic learning environment.
“I’m always asking myself, how can I make this better?”
Students remain in Travis’ program for an average of 2-5 years, or until they build up enough confidence to be re-introduced in the general education setting. Many young adults have risen to the occasion and are thriving, largely in part to Travis’ genuine guidance and support. As an advocate for their many strengths and talents, Travis encourages everyone to choose hard work and believe in the value of their accomplishments. “I want my students to take pride in what they do,” he says.
Travis has established successful relationships with parents and families by suggesting beneficial services and programs like ABLE United. Travis sees the value in ABLE United to the disability community. He says, “I will promote any resource that helps my students.”
What we do matters. When we prioritize energy and heart to our work, it becomes less about personal success and more about the lives we touch. ABLE United proudly highlights disability advocates and leaders like Travis.
