Independence. Quality of life. A better future. Both ABLE United and Special Olympics Florida are committed to making these a reality for individuals with disabilities. It’s for this reason that the two organizations enjoy a unique partnership, one which will be on display at the Special Olympics Florida Summer Games.
Special Olympics Florida, which serves more than 38,000 athletes statewide, is a part of a global movement to help people with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing the public’s awareness of their capabilities and needs.
Special Olympics Florida provides year-round sports training and competition to children and adults with intellectual disabilities, at no cost to the athlete or their caregiver as a means to achieve physical fitness, self-esteem and the life skills necessary to be productive, respected and contributing members of their communities.
The organization’s Summer Games, one of its largest events, is a highlight. Held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex May 19 – 20, athletes will compete in events ranging from bocce and volleyball to tennis and track and field. Special Olympics Florida Summer Games is also the site of the conclusion of the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
