Faces of ABLE: Meet Camille

When Camille Tate talks about financial independence, one word comes up again and again: security.

Camille lost her vision in 2005 due to diabetes and is also the child of a blind parent — experiences that have shaped how she approaches life, advocacy, and planning for the future. Today, she serves as president of the National Federation of the Blind of Florida, where she works to ensure blind individuals can fully participate in the communities where they live, work, and play.

Outside of her advocacy work, Camille is working toward a degree in history, with plans to attend law school and pursue a career in disability rights. She enjoys reading, listening to music, playing strategy and role-playing games, and spending time outdoors — often going for walks or cooking at home.

Independence is something she values deeply. “I live on my own, shop independently, and maintain my home,” she shares. “That’s really important to me.”

Camille first learned about ABLE United through a presentation at a National Federation of the Blind of Florida convention. When eligibility expanded, she immediately realized what it could mean.

“The opportunity to open an ABLE account has given me peace of mind,” she says. “I can put money away for times when everyday expenses become too high.”

She plans to use her ABLE account to save for assistive technology — essential tools that support independence and workforce participation but can often be costly.

“My ABLE account means greater independence,” she explains. “It allows me to save for hard times, and it gives friends and family a way to contribute and support my goals.”

Looking ahead, Camille is focused on finishing her degree, pursuing law school, and returning to the workforce — with the goal of showing others that independence after disability is possible.
