Qualified Disability Expenses: More Than You Might Think
When you hear “Qualified Disability Expense,” you might think of medical bills, prescriptions or assistive equipment. And you’d be right – but there’s so much more…
ABLE funds can potentially be used for a wide range of expenses, including some you face every day.
What Does “Qualified” Actually Mean?
A Qualified Disability Expense, or QDE, is an expense that relates to the account holder’s disability and helps maintain or improve their health, independence or quality of life.
That means an expense doesn’t necessarily have to be medically necessary to qualify.
“Wait…That Can Be a QDE?”
This is where many account holders are surprised. Depending on an individual’s circumstances, QDEs may include everyday expenses such as:
- Groceries: Food and other basic living expenses may qualify.
- Rent and utilities: Housing expenses can include rent, mortgage payments, utilities and other eligible costs.
- Education: Tuition, books, supplies, tutoring and other education-related expenses that support the account holder’s needs and goals.
- Transportation: From public transportation and rideshare services to vehicle-related expenses, getting where you need to go can be an important part of independence.
- Technology: A smartphone, computer, tablet or other technology may qualify when it helps support the account holder’s needs.
- Travel: Even certain travel or vacation expenses may qualify when they relate to the individual’s disability and support their health, independence or quality of life.
The key is that not every purchase in these categories automatically qualifies. The expense should have a connection to the account holder’s disability and meet the requirements of a QDE.
Think Beyond “Medical”
ABLE accounts were created to help people with disabilities save and pay for expenses that support their lives — and life involves a lot more than doctor visits.
When thinking about how to use your ABLE United account, consider the bigger picture: What expenses help support your health, independence and quality of life?
Are There Tax Implications?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions. In general:
If ABLE United account withdrawals are used for Qualified Disability Expenses, then there are no taxes on the earnings portion of those withdrawals. If withdrawals from the account for the calendar year exceed the QDE, the account holder may be subject to income tax, plus an additional 10% penalty on the earnings portion of the withdrawals. You can learn more about potential tax implications here.
