Do I need to receive SSI or Medicaid to open an ABLE account?
No. You do not need to currently receive SSI, Medicaid or any other public benefits to open an ABLE account. Eligibility is based on specific disability criteria and the age at which your disability began, not on whether you receive benefits.
Beginning in 2026, individuals whose qualifying disability began before age 46 may be eligible. Eligible account holders can save and invest for Qualified Disability Expenses, and earnings grow tax-free when used for those expenses.
