ABLE and Public Benefits

Generally, funds in (or withdrawn from) an ABLE United account are disregarded when determining Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medicaid eligibility.

Saving for the Future and Keeping SSI

Save beyond the $2,000 resource limit for SSI.

  • Up to $100,000 in an account is not a countable resource
  • Keep funds for future disability expenses

Family and Friends

Contributions are not income.

  • Anyone can contribute
  • No federal income tax deduction
  • Contribute up to $18,000 per year or more under ABLE to Work

Housing Expenses

Housing expenses are not a countable resource for SSI if they are:

  • Paid directly from the ABLE United account to a third-party
  • Withdrawn and paid in the same month

Retained Withdrawals

Withdrawals retained for Qualified Disability Expenses, other than housing, are not a countable resource for SSI.

  • Must remain unspent and identifiable
  • Excluded in the months leading up to the actual expenditure

No Impact on Medicaid Eligibility

Funds in an ABLE United account are disregarded for the purposes of determining Medicaid eligibility.

The individual will not lose Medicaid benefits if SSI is suspended due to the ABLE United account balance exceeding $100,000.

Medicaid Recovery

Unless prohibited by federal law, the Florida Medicaid program may not file a claim for Medicaid recovery of funds in an ABLE account. Learn more.
